Knights and Liars

Theory

There are two types of inhabitants on the Island of Knights and Liars:

  • Knights always tell the truth
  • Liars always lie

You are visiting this island and to survive you need to distinguish between Liars and Knights.
Luckily, you can ask them questions, and the native inhabitants always answer you!

Problems

1. You ask two people you meet on the Island, Tom and Tim, if they are Knights.
Tom says he is a Knight. Can you figure out who Tom is?
Tim says he is a Liar. Can you figure out who Tim is?

2. While visiting the Knights and Liars Island, you had a conversation with a local Knight. You
asked him the same question twice, and he gave you two different answers. What could be
your question?

3. Andy and Ben live on the Island of Knights and Liars. Andy says: “We are both liars”. Who is
Andy and who is Ben?

4. Alice and Bob live on the Island of Knights and Liars. Alice says: “We are the same kind”.
Bob says: “We are different kinds”. Who is Alice and who is Bob?

5. Three citizens are passing by. You ask these three inhabitants: "How many among you are
knights?"

The first replies: "There is none

‍The second says: here is only one

What will the third inhabitant say?

“Exactly one of these statements is true.”
“Exactly two of these statements are true.”
“Exactly three of these statements are true.”

.......

“Exactly ten of these statements are true.”
