The father is 32 years old, the son is 5 years old. In how many years will the father be 10 times older than his son?
Two years ago.
Let us denote the required period by the letter x.
After x years, the father will be 32 + x years old, and the son will be (5 + x). Since the father must be 10 times older than the son, then
32 + x = 10(5 + x).
Solving this equation, we get the answer: x = –2. “In minus 2 years” means “two years ago.”
When composing the equation, we did not think about the fact that the father's age will never in the future be 10 times greater than the son's age. The equation turned out to be more thoughtful than us and took care of everything itself.
