There are three milk cans with capacities of 3 litres, 5 litres, and 8 litres. The largest can contains 8 litres of milk, and the rest of the cans are empty. How do you use these cans to split the milk in half?

Answer

Easy!

SOLUTIOn

You can use the following steps to split the milk in half using the 3-liter, 5-liter, and 8-liter cans:

Step 1: Fill the 5-liter can to its capacity.

Step 2: Pour the milk from the 5-liter can into the 3-liter can. This leaves you with exactly 2 liters of milk in the 5-liter can (5 - 3 = 2).

Step 3: Empty the 3-liter can.

Step 4: Pour the 2 liters of milk from the 5-liter can into the 3-liter can.

Step 5: Fill the 5-liter can again.

Step 6: Carefully pour milk from the 5-liter can into the 8-liter can until the 8-liter can is full. This leaves you with 4 liters of milk in the 5-liter can (5 - 1 = 4).

Step 7: Now, the 3-liter can is empty, and the 5-liter can has 4 liters of milk. Pour the 4 liters from the 5-liter can into the 3-liter can.

Step 8: The 5-liter can currently has 0 liters of milk, and the 3-liter can has 4 liters. Pour the milk from the 3-liter can into the 5-liter can.

Step 9: At this point, the 5-liter can has 4 liters of milk, and the 8-liter can has 4 liters as well.

Now, you have successfully split the 8 liters of milk into two equal parts using the 3-liter, 5-liter, and 8-liter cans.
